INTRO

We have talked about it before, but man, there are a lot of mechanical keyboard options, eh? So many people have learned of the immense improvement in the keyboard game that can be acquired with so many mechanical keyboard choices. You can make one on your own with parts you source, or buy a premade one that fits your needs. So many options! You may have caught wind of the name Keychron, who is viewed by many as a solid entry-level brand that can sport great features like hotswappability, deep customization (their own launcher/QMK/ZMK/VIA/etc), products with various key switch types and more. Keychon has become a well-known part of many mechanical keyboard communities. They have entry-level options, as well as higher-grade things if you're looking for some of that. Keyboards, keyboard parts, other accessories and even some mice. Keychron is an established Keyboard company. Some months ago, I ran a FGF Giveaway with MechanicalKeyboards.com that featured a build of a Keychron keyboard. Now I can host this one with them directly!

To promote the Keychron brand and their products, I am happy to announce a FGF Giveaway from Keychron! It'll be a smaller event than some of our other ones, but it will still be nice to showcase these guys while giving out a couple goodies. This giveaway will be for 2 Keychron V1 Ultra Keyboards! The V1 Ultra is their latest in the V series, their plastic design boards, which is often their "entry-level" line. The V1 Ultra is an 8K polling rate capable board with hot-swap, tri-mode connectivity (meaning wired, Bluetooth and 2.GHz dongle), Mac OS and Windows profile switching, customization through ZMK or the Keychron web launcher, and more. Essentially the perfect middle ground for a solid mech keyboard with premium features, and competitive pricing!

REVIEW

To give a personal touch to this giveaway, Keychron sent me an Q3 Ultra Keyboard, which I compared to two other Keychron boards! One of which was a V1, which would have a lot of similarity to the V1 Ultra on offer today. Here is a video of me unboxing and reviewing it on the FGF YouTube channel - https://youtu.be/PTpNgp-daxo

TLDW: I loved the build quality and metal feel of the Q10 that I got from MK last year, but couldn't get on with the "Alice" layout. I bought a slightly modded V1 on Kijiji (used local market) recently since I wanted another Keychron board and really liked it, but could definitely feel the difference of the plastic case. The Q3 Ultra ended up being the perfect solution for me! The Keychron Q3 Ultra has all the keys I want, loads of premium features and customization, and even a fun little dial. I do personally dislike the KSA profile keycaps it ships with though and will change those out. I had a negative with the board though, but one that was resolvable. A setting called "Keyboard Bounce Time" had a default config for the "Reset seconds" of 50 ms, which was driving me nuts! Meant "book" and "good" became "bok" and "god" regularly. Thankfully it could be changed, so I dropped it down to 15 ms instead, and I was saved. I might simply type too fast for that.

The pricing for the metal keyboards ends up being higher, so that is something to consider, but I do love the feel. I am very happy with the Q3 Ultra, but could've saved some cash if I were to buy this by going for a non-ultra, since I don't need wireless. It's fantastic though!
